Crinum Thaianum, also known as the Thai Onion Plant, is a hardy bulb plant with long, wavy green leaves. It's perfect for larger tanks and makes a beautiful background plant. Over time, it can grow very tall—up to 60 inches—and may even bloom with white flowers.
Note: You will receive a bare (un-potted ) 2-4" plant, not a potted version like our Potted Crinum Calamistratum. This is also not just a bulb—it includes healthy foliage.
Growing Requirements
-
Light: Medium to high light
-
CO₂: Not required, but helps with faster growth
-
Temperature: 72–86°F (22–30°C)
-
pH: 6.8–7.5
-
Hardness: 4–18 dGH
-
Placement: Background (best for bigger tanks)
-
Growth: Moderate, grows from the bulb and produces baby bulbs over time
How to Plant
-
Bury only the bottom 2/3 of the bulb—leave the top exposed to prevent rot
-
Use rich substrate or root tabs for best results
-
Remove old or damaged leaves as needed
Crinum Thaianum plants grow best with root tabs placed under their roots, as they absorb nutrients mainly from there. Liquid fertilizer can work but isn’t as effective.
Crinum Thaianum is a low-maintenance plant that works well in most freshwater setups and pairs nicely with peaceful tank mates.
As I like to keep real ecosystems in my aquariums, there’s always a chance of harmless hitchhikers like snails or dwarf shrimp tagging along with your plants!
I personally keep several beneficial snail species in my tanks, including Colorful Ramshorns, Bronze Bladder and Pond Snails, Mini Rams, and Malaysian Trumpet Snails. These snails stay relatively small, help clean the aquarium, and do not eat healthy plants or cause harm. However, if you’d rather avoid any hitchhikers, I highly recommend checking out our blog on how to safely disinfect aquarium plants before adding them to your tank:

All plants are freshly snipped or harvested and packed right before shipment. I take great care in preparing every order and use methods that have consistently produced the best results over many years in the hobby. A lot of love goes into every package, so please don’t leave your plants sitting in a hot mailbox for too long 🙏
Thank you for looking, aqua friends! 💚
