Guppy Care 101
The awesome variety that Guppies offer is simply stunning - small, vibrant, full of life, and in a boatload of colors besides!
They're a joy to have, and pretty easy to care for... making them a favorite among both newbie and seasoned fish enthusiasts.
They are bred and collected, with guppy shows across the U.S. and world to display and trade new breeds and variants.
Did you know, some even come with certificates of pedigree.... like puppies?!
Here's a handy guide to help you on your guppy-keeping journey.
1. Home Sweet Home:
- Tank Size: Guppies may be small, but they are very active. A 10-gallon tank or larger should give them enough room to do their little fishy laps. A pair or trio (1M, 2F) is great to start off with.
- Filtration: To keep their water clean, a Nano Sponge Filter is a great choice. Smooth, easy water flow means no tattered fins or babies being caught in a filter intake.
- Heater: And to keep them warm and cozy, an adjustable heater is a must have. Keep them between 76°-78°F and remember: the warmer the tank, the more active and vibrant they may be, but their lifespan is reduced.
2. Just Right Conditions:
- Water Parameters: Guppies like their water a bit on the alkaline side, with a pH 7 and above. Livebearers need hard water to stay healthy and in breeding condition. You can keep track of this with a good water testing kit.
- Décor and Substrate: As for their home decor, guppies love a good plant or three to hide in. Check out live plants like Anubias or Java Fern. Substrate isn't much of a concern so go with something that looks good to you, and works for the plant's you'll keep with them.
3. Munchies:
- Balanced Diet: Guppies are not picky eaters. They'll happily munch on flakes, pellets, and freeze dried food. For a special treat, give them live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
- Feeding Schedule: Remember, feed them TINY amounts, 2-3 times a day. Consider less: once a day and just enough can also extend their lifespan and health.
4. Health is Wealth:
- Water Changes: To keep your guppies in tip-top shape, regular water changes are key. Siphons and water changers can make this task a breeze. 25% a week is a great starting point.
- Quarantine: When adding new fish to the tank, it's a good idea to quarantine them first using quarantine tanks-- just to make sure everyone is healthy!
5. Baby on Board:
Guppies are quite the breeders.
It's hard to understate that. They do, however, have a reputation for eating their young.
If you're interested in keeping baby guppies, breeding boxes and nets can help keep the pregnant females or newborn fry safe. Feed small powedered flake foods like chlorella or live baby brine shrimp. They'll grow fast!
Taking care of guppies is truly a rewarding experience. With the right environment, a balanced diet, and regular maintenance, you'll have a tank full of happy, healthy, and colorful guppies in no time.
