Sundews are carnivorous plants that use sticky hairs on their leaves to trap prey. They attract and capture insects with their glistening dew-like droplets, powerful adhesive, and digestive enzymes. Sundews can grow up to 10 inches tall and come in varying sizes and appearances.
Sundews can be found throughout the majority of the United States, with the exception of certain areas in the Southwest. They thrive in wetland environments and soil with low levels of nitrogen.
Sundews feed on insects, with mosquitoes as a main part of their diet. They can kill and digest trapped insects in about 15 minutes to a few weeks. The plant's secretions are harmless to assassin bugs, who use it to hunt prey.
Several sundew species have the ability to self-pollinate, while others rely on seed production for reproduction.
