The Dwarf Rasbora (Boraras maculatus) is a stunningly gorgeous nano fish that is super popular among fish enthusiasts due to its cool school behavior, chill attitude, and tiny size. Males of this species can flaunt a lively ruby red hue. This species is sometimes mixed up with the very similar Chili Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) as well as other members of the Boraras crew. Actually, experts are still debating if the different Boraras species are distinct or just local variations of a single species. One thing's for sure, the Dwarf Rasbora stands out with its spots and vibrant ruby color on those males.
The Dwarf Rasbora likes to swim and feed in the top and middle of the tank, but can also be found in the middle and bottom levels. It gets along with other small, peaceful fish and can also be kept with dwarf shrimp and larger invertebrates. Keeping it in a school of 6 or more is necessary, with a larger school of 20+ being ideal. They love slow, acidic water with lots of plants and dark substrate. Avoid keeping them with aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food. Not one to be finicky with food, the Dwarf Rasbora will maintain its vibrant colors and flourish with a diverse diet of mainly meat-based treats. From top-grade flakes and pellets to live or frozen snacks like Artemia and Tubifex, or even finely chopped bloodworms, this little fishy will devour it all with gusto.
