An interesting alternative tiny pet!
Fiddler crabs (Usa sp.) are sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females look different! The males will be brighter, with one noticeably larger claw they use to signal to each other and woo females.
Although they only grow to about 2", Fiddlers are so interesting to watch burrow and sign. Watch them wave at you!
- Fiddler crabs are not community tank inhabitants. They will need their own slightly salty-watered habitat with dry sand/ mud as well. They'll try to catch and eat any fish you keep with them.
- Living ten years or longer, Fiddler crabs can also regrow lost limbs in their next molt!
- They are not fully aquatic species, and will need a shallow water and terrestrial tank.. similar to a turtle or amphibian.
- These originate in shallow, muddy brackish shore areas in Florida.
- Keep a tightly-fitting lid-- they are escape artists!
- As omnivores, they can accept a wide range of flake, frozen, and prepared fresh foods.
- Crabs regularly molt-- similar to dwarf shrimp! Just like shrimp, leave the old molt in the tank for a few weeks, as they crab will want to nibble on it for calcium.
- Change the brackish water 10% per week. If you choose to add a filter, only use an internal one. They WILL climb out of the tank if you use a hang-on back style filter.
- No breeding! They may lay eggs, but the babies need deep ocean water to mature. It's next to impossible in a home setting.
- Single crab sexes chosen at random, sorry! Choose the sexed option for multiples.
