This group of Celebes Rainbowfish are young fish, not fully colored or grown, and are unsexed. There is variation in older vs. younger males, You can see in the photos there is a difference between a young male, and a fully grown male in mating display.
Celebes Rainbowfish (Marosatherina ladigesi) originates from Sulawesi, Indonesia and favors dense vegetation streams. Schools of these create perfect planted aquariums, particularly those with floating plants. Adult males show yellow and blue body and fin hues, becoming more vibrant when competing for mates. Males also possess extended, fan-shaped second dorsal and anal fins. Females lack the males' brilliance, yet remain visually attractive.
This fish is peaceful with other species of similar size and can be kept with peaceful invertebrates. Dark substrate can also improve coloration. It's a fully freshwater species that can survive in brackish, but doesn't do well in soft water.
Feed Celebes Rainbowfish high-quality flakes and small frozen or live meaty foods for best health & color. Timid, it can be out-competed for food, so take care it gets its share.
The rainbowfish family appeals to freshwater aquaria owners due to its members' peacefulness, strength, and vivid colors. Most rainbowfish become too large for nano tankmates, but Celebes Rainbowfish stay small enough to safely keep with dwarf shrimp and most invertebrates.
